happiness (hanh phuc) bridge
phu my – soc trang – vietnam
The Lotus School Foundation is excited to break ground on our 62nd project, the building of Happiness Bridge that serves over 500 households located in Phu My’s community of Soc Trang province. Currently, the only bridge connecting the two sides of the river is a fragile monkey bridgebuilt from a single tree trunk (see picture) supported by bamboo poles. It is dangerously narrow and unstable, and during rainy days it becomes slippery, causing frequent accidents. Even schoolchildren, on their way to class, often fall while trying to cross.
Despite its risks, this bridge is the lifeline for more than 500 households—over 2,000 people—who depend on it every single day. A safe and sturdy bridge would truly transform the community, providing secure passage for thousands of residents. It would also ensure that during the busy rice harvest seasons, when many villagers work as hired laborers, they can reach their fields safely and without fear, as this is their only route.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $11,800. The local community has pledged $3,800. We are sincerely thankful for for following three sponsors for funding the needed $8,000 to support the new bridge: Sponsor: Trinh Truong (honoring Bà Triệu Nhược Mai) – Sponsor: Thuan Ta (honoring Ông Bà Văn Anh) – Sponsor: Cuc Lai (honoring Ông Lại Minh Châu).
The new bridge will be 115 feet long and 6.5 feet wide—strong, reliable, and built to serve generations to come. Construction is already underway and is expected to be completed by November. The grand-opening ceremony is scheduled in January of 2026.
